English Language Learning

Tonkla School strives to be a foundation for the development of a global citizen, in which the English language is key to communicating internationally. The most widely used academic resources are either written in or translated to English. Thus, the English language is a gateway to understanding the world’s vast knowledge and future progression.

We want our students to be proficient in English at a level comparable to students studying in an international school. Our curriculum integrates the English language into at least 50% of all activities in every level from kindergarten to primary school. From prekindergarten, students learn English through listening to stories in English and playing with adults. As they progress, students learn to listen, speak, read, and write English in various subjects, such as literature, science and history.

Our initial approach to teaching languages, both English and Thai, is by teaching phonics. Phonics is a way to learn language by developing sound awareness. Slowly, our ears learn subtle differences in sound and tone. Consequently, students learn how sounds, symbols, words, and letters are related to how words sound and how they are written. This essential building block of education results in an exponential learning of vocabulary and enables us to be a ‘master of languages’.

With a strong foundation, we can better integrate language into different classes, activities, and daily life. By taking English beyond classrooms into playgrounds and outdoor learning spaces, the students can learn more practical use of the language. Students will learn how to use English for communicating ideas and expressing themselves
